As per approval, a 100mm overlap is required for each connection to maintain fire rating. The corners of the duct also need to be taken into account. Based on one layer for a 600x600mm duct, you will require a minimum of 55m² of FyreWrap material depending on how many fire rated walls the duct passes through.

 

FyreWrap comes in a number of sizes including:

Standard FyreWrap which is 610mm wide x 7.62m long.

Jumbo FyreWrap which is 1220mm x 7.62m.

FyreWrap is 38mm thick. Due to the nature of the core material, this will compress somewhat in the event that smaller pinning methods are used, or to squeeze around external services.

Standard size (610mm x 7.62m): One cardboard carton contains one roll.  There are 12 boxes per pallet. Each carton weighs 25kg. 

Jumbo Size (1220mm x 7.62m): One cardboard carton contains one roll.  There are 6 boxes per pallet. Each carton weighs 50kg. 

No, the installation methods (steel banding or pinning) are quite flexible; however, if your duct cross-sectional area is over certain limits then pinning is required. The table below identifies what these dimensions are:

Cut edges must be completely sealed with the reinforced duct, foil tape as soon as possible after you make the cut.

Yes, most contractors will do it purely for an aesthetic or aiding installation reasons. It is possible to hold wrap temporarily in place with filament tape prior to correct fixing methods being applied.

Trafalgar Fire has an approved solution for using the wrap on two or three sides only. Contact one of our engineers to find out more on this at technical@tfire.com.au.

Not necessarily, other options include wrapping it off-site or wrapping on the ground and lift into place.

Yes, FyreWrap is completely safe to work with. It has a core made up of calcia, magnesia and silica making it a bio-soluble solution that will pass through your body if inhaled. Click here for more information on health and safety.

FyreWrap is capable of achieving upto a two hour fire rating (FRL) with 1 layer for fire from the inside and the outside. The table below shows the details on what is required to acheive this:

It is easy to verify if FyreWrap is installed correctly by following these two rules:

  1. Make sure there is a 100mm overlap at every joint of the product.
  2. If steel bands are used, there needs to be one band at the joint/overlap and one in the middle of the role (this equates to 265mm centres). If pinning is used, the pins need to be at 250mm centres.
  3. Ensure additional material is located at fire rated walls.
  4. Confirm all wall penetration details are correct as per FyreWrap Technical Manual.

FyreWrap originated from the USA, where stringent laws and compliance requirements are more detailed than Australia's. As a result, FyreWrap has easily-recognised red banding all over it. If you cannot see the red branding, it is not a fire-rated product.

Yes, the acoustic rating for FyreWrap is STC 31dB.

Yes, the thermal rating for FyreWrap is 1.2 m².K/W for the 38mm thick material.

The outer foil is purely for encapsulation purposes. FyreWrap is quite sturdy and rarely damaged; however repairing is simple as taping the tear up with the approved duct reinforced tape. If there is damage to the inner core material, simply place a fresh piece of FyreWrap over the damage (ensuring you have a 75mm overlap).

No, the FyreWrap core is made from calcium magnesium silicate (cms).

Bio-persistence is the residence time in the lung if inhaled. Low bio-persistence products dissolve in body fluid if inhaled, after a number of days. FyreWrap is bio-soluble meaning that is completely safe to work with.

Many consultants insist on including FyreWrap into their general/master spec. Our engineering team can assist you with your specific requirements. As an example a specification will look something like below:

FIRE RATED DUCTWORK 

Where nominated on the drawings provide for 2 hour FRL (120/120/120) of ductwork including ductwork supports if required. 

Ductwork nominated as fire rated shall be appropriately wrapped in 38mm 96kg/m3 fully encapsulated fire resistant material, Trafalgar FyreWrap Elite 1.5 or equal approved, sealed/stopped and certified to meet the fire rating requirement.

The fire resistant material shall be used to meet the 2 hour FRL (120/120/120). 

All joining, fixing and finishing techniques shall be finished to the manufactures requirements.

Where an access panel is located in a fire rated section of ductwork the panel shall have equivalent rating. Access panel shall be of the same manufacture as the fire wrapping system. 

Where the fire rated ductwork requires additional thermal insulation to meet the R value required for that section of ductwork, insulation shall be applied using a technique approved by the fire resistant material manufacture.

All fire rated ductwork including joining, fixing, finishing, access panel and additional thermal insulation details shall be shown on the Mechanical shop drawings.
